Who We Want

We want people willing to do what it takes day in and day out to close the achievement gap. We want individuals looking for socially meaningful work and for a challenge. We want people who understand that a teacher's strengths and skills, and who will go above and beyond the perceived limits, will determine which students go to college and which have meaningful choice in their life paths. We want a commitment to seeing our youth succeed, and individuals who will persevere no matter the obstacles to the goal. Oakland Teaching Fellows help shape the future of education and communities in Oakland.

There is no one profile for an ideal OTF candidate; Fellows span a wide range of ages and backgrounds and bring a diverse set of talents and skills to the program. Strong candidates are those who are committed to having a positive effect on student achievement, who display excellence through their previous endeavors, and who are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to reach and influence students – especially those in under-served areas – on a daily basis. We want people with little or no teaching experience but who are driven to succeed. We want people who have excelled in school and in their careers. We want people driven to do something that matters for the students of Oakland, who will commit to seeing their students achieve and see that commitment through despite multiple challenges.

We are looking for candidates to teach in our critical shortage areas: Math, science, special education, computer technology, Spanish, bilingual Spanish education, and physical education. We are looking for candidates who want to make a long-term commitment to our students and schools.

After an intensive six-week Training Institute, Fellows begin teaching full time in the fall- immediately given the chance to work hard each day to impact student achievement in their classrooms. Fellows continue to make this difference for years to come as they grow and improve in their careers as educators.
