A Fellow's Day
A Typical School Day
A full teaching day in the Oakland Unified School District is just under seven hours from start to finish. A typical school day may run from 8:25 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. or 7:55 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. In addition, Fellows are required to enroll and attend courses to earn their California teaching credential - as well as professional development activities to help support their classroom efforts. Beyond the formal school day, Fellows typically spend a significant amount of time outside of class preparing lessons, grading student work and assessments, and communicating with parents and guardians. They may have after-school meetings with school staff, their grade-level or subject team, or students' family members. According to current Fellows in the classroom, new teachers can expect a full work day to run between 12-14 hours during their first year in the classroom.
Below is an example that one Fellow shared as a typical schedule in the first year of teaching:
| 6:00a.m. | Wake up/Coffee/News |
| 6:45a.m. | Travel to school |
| 7:00a.m. | Arrive at school/make copies |
| 7:30a.m. | Prepare room and Opening Activity |
| 8:00a.m. | Teach |
| 12:00p.m. | Lunch with students for tutoring |
| 12:45p.m. | Teach |
| 2:00p.m. | Make phone calls to students' families/write notes to send home/Lesson plan |
| 3:15p.m. | Travel to credentialing classes |
| 4:00p.m. | Credentialing class |
| 7:00p.m. | Travel home |
| 7:30p.m. | Dinner/Relax |
| 8:30p.m. | Lesson planning/Grading papers |

Fellows' dedication, proactive problem solving, and hard work each day can translate into a real and significant impact on their students' academic success.
