Make a Difference

We want individuals looking for socially meaningful work and for a challenge. We want people who understand that a teacher’s strengths and skills could change numerous lives. We want teachers who will go above and beyond the perceived limits because they have the ability to influence students daily and impact student choices for a lifetime.  We want a commitment to seeing our youth succeed, and individuals who will persevere no matter the obstacles to the goal. As an alternate route to teaching, Oakland Teaching Fellows recruits, selects, and trains talented and successful individuals to shape the future of education and communities in Oakland.

In the fall of 2008, over 70 first-year Oakland Teaching Fellows entered the classrooms where they were most needed. This year’s cohort joined 2005-2007 Fellows, who are already making a difference and significantly impacting student achievement across Oakland. Fellows in the 2009 cohort will also teach in critical shortage area subjects in the District's most challenged schools. Fellows will teach math, science, special education, Spanish, bilingual education, and physical education in schools throughout the District. Although new to teaching, these accomplished individuals will be dedicated to ensuring high academic achievement for their students.

After an intensive training, Fellows will begin teaching full time in the fall- immediately given the chance to work hard each day to impact student achievement in their classrooms. Fellows continue to have the chance to make this difference for years to come as they grow and improve in their careers as educators.
